Hammond, Indiana • 1950s-1960s
Melvin L. Burks was born into abject poverty in Hammond, Indiana, raised by his mother Lourdes and grandmother Mama Gret. Despite constant moves and instability, these two formidable women forged a protective circle around ten children, teaching foundational lessons about self-worth, dignity, and resilience.
His mother's wisdom shaped his approach to conflict: "What are you gonna do? Fight everyone in the world?" This lesson in emotional regulation and choosing battles wisely became a cornerstone of his leadership philosophy.
The family's spiritual practices, including saying grace before every meal and the mysterious tradition of placing water on the radio during church services, created psychological resilience through structured rituals and mindfulness.
Building Leaders Through Sports
As a coach, Melvin developed his philosophy of "empire building" — creating a protective circle around young people. His coaching wasn't just about winning games; it was about building future leaders through discipline, character, and responsibility.
He believed in transforming lives through sports, teaching athletes that their value extends far beyond the scoreboard. This protective leadership model became the foundation for his later work in mental health and organizational leadership.
Hamilton Center • 1979–Present
Melvin started at Hamilton Center in 1979 as a part-time evening receptionist and security guard. The phone rang the moment he walked in the door — divine timing. He wasn't focused on titles, just doing the job in front of him.
He built programs from scratch, progressing through roles: Security → Facility Manager → HR → Executive Director → President & CEO. Each role prepared him for the next, demonstrating his adaptive leadership and servant leadership principles.
As current President & CEO, Melvin has institutionalized Juneteenth and International Women's Day as corporate holidays with mandatory education. He launched the New Citizen Program to shatter stigma for formerly incarcerated individuals and practices "Long Vision" — seeing 1-3 years ahead to position the organization for the future.

"I wasn't focused on the title, just the job in front of me. Each role prepared me for the next."
