About the Role

Part-time consulting grounded in principle.

The Titan of Life Fellow is a consulting position — 4 to 8 hours per month. Fellows work alongside partner organizations, chapters, and programs to advance the Four Pillars in real settings. Participation is offered through three tiers: academic credit, an hourly rate of $20–$35 per hour, or the professional rate of $50–$75 per hour.

Above all, a Fellow must align with all of the core principles of Titan of Life — Professional, Respectful, Fair, and Service. The principles are not aspirational language here; they are the standard by which Fellows are selected and the lens through which they work.

  • Advise partner organizations adopting the Four Pillars framework
  • Coach chapter leads and facilitators through curriculum delivery
  • Review and strengthen programs grounded in the Fundamentals of Life

The Standard

Four principles, one life's evidence

Every Fellow is held to the Four Pillars. Each principle is more than a value statement — it is a pattern made visible in the life of Melvin L. Burks, the founder whose story anchors the framework.

Principle 1

Professional

Fellows demonstrate excellence through preparation, accountability, integrity, continuous improvement, and responsible stewardship of their work.

In a Fellow's practice

Fellows arrive prepared, honor every commitment, and hold their work to a high standard — treating each engagement as a stewardship of trust.

In Melvin L. Burks' life

Melvin began at Hamilton Center in 1979 as a part-time evening receptionist and security guard. He wasn't focused on the title, just the job in front of him — progressing from Security to Facility Manager, HR, Executive Director, and President & CEO over 45+ years of continuous growth.

"I wasn't focused on the title, just the job in front of me. Each role prepared me for the next."

Principle 2

Respectful

Fellows recognize the inherent dignity of every individual through empathy, active listening, humility, inclusion, and thoughtful communication.

In a Fellow's practice

Fellows listen before they advise, honor the dignity of every partner, and communicate with humility and care.

In Melvin L. Burks' life

Raised in abject poverty by his mother Lourdes and grandmother Mama Gret, Melvin learned dignity from the women who built a protective circle around ten children. His mother's question taught him to choose understanding over conflict — a lesson he carried into coaching and leadership.

"What are you gonna do? Fight everyone in the world?"

Principle 3

Fair

Fellows pursue ethical, transparent, and equitable decision-making while considering multiple perspectives and promoting trust.

In a Fellow's practice

Fellows weigh multiple perspectives, make decisions transparently, and build trust through equity and integrity.

In Melvin L. Burks' life

As President & CEO, Melvin institutionalized Juneteenth and International Women's Day as corporate holidays with mandatory education — embedding equity and understanding into the culture. His Long Vision ensures decisions are made with fairness to the people who come after.

"Long vision is seeing what's coming so we'll never be behind."

Principle 4

Service

Fellows use their knowledge, talents, and influence to improve the lives of others and strengthen families, organizations, and communities.

In a Fellow's practice

Fellows apply their expertise to strengthen the organizations and communities they serve, measuring success by the lives improved.

In Melvin L. Burks' life

Across 45+ years of mental health leadership, Melvin launched the New Citizen Program to shatter stigma for formerly incarcerated individuals, championed destigmatization through storytelling, and wrote Titan of Life — now adopted by 200+ universities to serve students.

"The people who help us understand our value become the foundation upon which resilience, leadership, mental health, and purpose are built."

Melvin L. Burks
The Founder

Why the principles trace back to one life.

The Four Pillars are not abstract. They are the record of a life — from a childhood in poverty in Hammond, Indiana, to 45 years of mental health leadership, to Indiana's highest civilian honor.

A Fellow doesn't simply agree with these principles; they are asked to live them, the way Melvin did: doing the job in front of them, honoring dignity, deciding fairly, and serving the people who come after.
